Buncombe County is currently seeking public input on its Pedestrian Plan, an effort that will help guide future investments in walking infrastructure and safety improvements. This is an opportunity for residents of all ages to share their experiences and ideas about how to make it easier and safer to walk in their communities.

Community decisions are strongest when they reflect the voices of the people who live, work, walk, and thrive there every day. At AARP North Carolina, we believe informed residents are empowered residents. That's why we work to connect people with opportunities to learn about local issues, share their experiences, and help shape the future of their communities.

More Ways to Benefit

One of the most important ways AARP supports livable communities is by encouraging civic engagement in local planning efforts. Whether it's improving transportation options, increasing safety for pedestrians, creating age-friendly neighborhoods, or ensuring that public spaces are accessible to everyone, community input matters. When residents participate in public meetings and planning processes, they help decision-makers better understand local needs and priorities.

AARP North Carolina encourages community members to participate in two upcoming public engagement opportunities:

Enka-Candler Public Meeting
August 26, 2026 | 4:30–7:30 p.m.

Owen Park Reimagining Public Engagement Session
August 27, 2026 | 5:00–7:00 p.m.

These events offer residents a chance to review proposed projects, ask questions, and provide feedback that could influence future improvements throughout the county.

Can't attend in person? You can still participate online through Buncombe County's engagement portal. Learn more and share your input through the Buncombe County Pedestrian Plan Engagement Page.
