RALEIGH— AARP North Carolina is encouraging veterans, military families and caregivers across the state to take advantage of Paws with Purpose, a new free video series that demonstrates how the bond between people and their dogs can support emotional wellbeing, reduce loneliness, and strengthen everyday life.
Developed by AARP's Veterans and Military Families initiative with Dogs Inc., a nonprofit organization that trains service and companion dogs, the series features practical, easy-to-follow dog training techniques that help veterans build confidence with their pets while creating healthy routines and fostering stronger social connections.

The launch comes as many veterans continue to experience challenges related to loneliness and social isolation. Research shows nearly 57% of veterans report experiencing loneliness, and 71% report lacking companionship.
"Many veterans and their caregivers face unique challenges when transitioning from military service or navigating caregiving responsibilities," said Rosalie Calarco, Associate State Director of AARP North Carolina. "Sometimes it's the small, everyday routines that make the biggest difference. Whether it's taking a walk, learning a new skill, or spending time with a trusted companion, those moments can help reduce isolation, build confidence, and create lasting connections."
The short-form videos feature trainers from Dogs Inc. and cover easy-to-follow techniques and training skills that dog owners can apply at home, including:
- Marking and Positive Reinforcement
- Sit and Down
- Come
- Heel and Loose Leash Walk
- Four on the Floor
- Distractions
Veterans, military families, caregivers and pet owners can access the free video series here. New videos will be released monthly.
