Voters 50-plus are the largest and most reliable voters in the country, making up 55% of the electorate in the 2024 general election.  And we want to hear from you! What are the issues you care about that candidates and elected officials should be addressing?

“For New Mexico, voters age 50 plus made up 58.3 % of the electorate in 2024,” said Beth Velasquez, Communications Director for AARP New Mexico. “As a result, candidates need to pay attention to the issues older voters care about if they want to get elected. Issues like protecting Social Security, now and in the future, providing more resources for family caregivers and having financial security.” 

 Voters 50-plus have historically played a decisive role in elections, including electing President Trump in 2016, former President Biden in 2020, President Trump, again in 2024, and congressional candidates who shaped majorities in both chambers. 

And older voters will be even more important in midterm elections, as they made up 61% of voters in battleground Congressional Districts in the 2022 elections.

The evening will begin with an overview of New Mexico politics, courtesy of Boyd and Monahan – what’s different from the primary to the general, the role New Mexico plays in the national landscape, and any trends surfacing.

Then AARP New Mexico will briefly discuss the priority issues it's working on at the state and federal levels.

Then, most importantly, attendees will have the opportunity to discuss what issues they care most about at the federal, state and local levels. What issues are you most concerned about? Do you think candidates and elected officials are addressing those issues?  How can AARP help?

“We held a similar town hall in 2024 focused on older women and their concerns, because within the older voter block, women were the wild card in that election. We learned a lot from that audience, who were mostly worried about health care access and property taxes,” Velasquez said.

“You would have thought crime would’ve been a big factor, but in that discussion, it really wasn’t, so you can learn a lot from just listening. What are their real concerns? That’s what we want to know and be able to share with lawmakers going into the general election,” she said.
