Omaha Law Takes Aim at Cryptocurrency Scams
Under a new city ordinance in Omaha, individuals or businesses operating or providing access to a cryptocurrency ATM must post a written notice that warns consumers of the potential fraud risks associated with using such machines.
The electronic kiosks allow users to buy and sell digital currency, such as Bitcoin, and can be found in gas stations, grocery stores and other businesses. They have become a popular tool for scammers since the transactions are difficult to trace.
Omaha City Councilmember Aimee Melton, who sponsored the measure to require warnings near crypto kiosks, received AARP Nebraska’s 2024 community fraud fighter award.
