AARP staff and volunteers work to give you a voice at the local, state, and federal level. During the 2026 Nebraska Legislative Session, 547 bills were introduced with 107 prioritized and 339 passed and signed into law by Governor Jim Pillen. Five bills ultimately received vetoes at the Governor’s desk, and while motions to override those vetoes were filed, four did not advance and will need to be reintroduced in the 2027 Session. The legislative process highlighted strong engagement on several key issues. AARP was actively involved in 19 advocacy wins and maintained interest in two bills that were ultimately vetoed, underscoring our continued commitment to advocating for older Nebraskans.

Highlights of the 60-day session include significant wins strengthening consumer protections targeting suspected elder exploitation, new enforcement actions against fraudulent advertising on social media, and coordinated crackdowns on mail key and lock theft linked to identify theft and organized crime.

Additional Key Wins:

  • Nebraska Protection of Seniors from Insurance Exploitation Act
  • Retroactive Medicaid eligibility restored
  • Adult Protective Services training requirements
  • AAA funding for Meals on Wheels and food insecurity
  • SNAP administrative funding
  • Rural health transformation funding
  • Provisions relating to nursing home facility rates and a money follows the person program under the Medical Assistance Act

AARP is committed to listening to your needs and giving you a voice in the upcoming 2027 Legislative Session.
