Immerse yourself in the heartfelt and powerful stories of Michigan's family caregivers through "Voices of Michigan Family Caregivers," our interactive storytelling experience. With an estimated 1.6 million unpaid family caregivers in the state, this experience allows you to explore personal narratives that highlight resilience, compassion and strength. These stories represent just a small fraction of the countless caregivers making invaluable contributions with unwavering commitment.
In this enduring love story, Jim stands as a beacon of strength and compassion as a dedicated caregiver for his wife, Kathleen, for over 15 years. Formerly both environmental scientists, Jim and Kathleen shared a passion for life and each other. Facing unexpected turns, Jim made the life-altering decision to retire early and become a full-time caregiver. Additionally, as a volunteer actively involved in the community, he plays a crucial role in educating and supporting others through his nonprofit organization Dementia Friendly Services. Jim's altruism serves as a powerful reminder that love has the potential to make a positive impact not only within the walls of our homes but also in the broader community. Kathy, a family caregiver from Alpena, faced a difficult reality when she left her job to care for her husband after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Losing her income meant her family suddenly lost 80% of their household income, leaving Kathy struggling to cover basic expenses while focusing on her husband’s daily care needs. Too young to access her retirement savings without financial penalties, Kathy is caught in a gap where assistance, such as a caregiver tax credit, could provide meaningful relief, easing the financial strain and helping her keep her family afloat during an already overwhelming chapter of her life. Listen to Kathy tell her story here.
Behind every statistic is a personal story. Gary’s caregiving journey highlights the emotional and financial realities many Michigan families face. In his story, Gary shares how caregiving gradually became an all-encompassing responsibility, requiring not only time and emotional energy but also ongoing financial management and personal sacrifice. Gary’s story reminds us that caregivers are not asking for recognition or praise. They want support so they can keep caring for the people they love. Stories like his underline why policy solutions, such as a caregiver tax credit, matter so much to real families across the state. Listen to Gary tell his story here.
AARP Michigan hopes these stories will be a source of connection, support and encouragement for caregivers who may feel alone in their struggles. We also hope it highlights the growing need to support family caregivers in Michigan by providing access to resources and financial relief. Together, we can celebrate the importance of caregiving and foster a community where every caregiver's experience is acknowledged and valued.
