Family caregivers provide invaluable support to loved ones every day, but often at a personal cost. Nearly one in four American adults serves as a caregiver, and many report high levels of emotional stress, loneliness, and burnout while balancing caregiving responsibilities with work, family, and their own health needs.

To help caregivers access support in a convenient and accessible way, AARP Hawaiʻi is giving away family caregiver goody bags with self-care resources, caregiving information, a gift certificate for free coffee, stress ball and a backscratcher at drive-through Care Pit Stops on Oahu, Hawaiʻi Island and Maui. The Care Pit Stops will take place on November 7 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.in Hilo at the Aging and Disability Resource Center, 1055 Kinoole Street, and in Kihei on November 14 at the Azeka Shopping Center Makai, 1280 S. Kihei Road. A Care Pit Stop on Oahu runs from 9 a.m. to noon at Leilehua High School in Wahiawa.

More Ways to Benefit

"Caregivers spend so much time caring for others that they often put their own well-being last," said Kealiʻi Lopez, AARP Hawaiʻi State Director. "The Care Pit Stop is designed to remind caregivers that taking care of themselves is not a luxury—it's an essential part of being able to care for others."

To reserve a caregiver goody bag, go to aarp.org/local or the AARP Hawaiʻi Facebook page and click on the events tab. You can also call 877-926-8300 to register for the event near you.

Research shows that more than half of family caregivers say caregiving makes it difficult to care for their own mental health, while many report feelings of stress, isolation, and exhaustion. The Care Pit Stop encourages caregivers to pause, recharge, and connect with resources that can help support their physical, emotional, and financial well-being.

Participants can remain in their vehicles while receiving information, resource materials, and connections to local services. The event is designed to fit into busy schedules and provide meaningful support with minimal time commitment.

Attendees will have the opportunity to:

  • Access free caregiving and self-care resources.
  • Learn about local programs and services available to caregivers and their families.
  • Connect with AARP resources and future caregiving support opportunities.
  • Receive event giveaways
