More than 2 million Georgians who receive Social Security could see a larger monthly benefit next year, based on current inflation trends.

AARP estimates the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will be about 3.6%, increasing the average retired worker's monthly benefit by approximately $75. The estimate is based on projections from Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Federal Reserve.

More Ways to Benefit

The annual COLA is designed to help benefits keep pace with inflation and is especially important for older adults who depend on Social Security to cover everyday expenses. Rising costs for groceries, utilities, housing, and health care continue to strain many household budgets across Georgia

The Social Security Administration determines the COLA using changes in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) during July, August and September. The official 2027 adjustment will be announced in October and will take effect with benefits paid in January 2027.

Although the estimate could change as additional inflation data becomes available, it provides retirees with an early planning tool as they prepare their budgets for the coming year. Since automatic COLAs began in 1975, it has helped protect the purchasing power of Social Security benefits during periods of rising prices—making it one of the program's most valuable features for older Americans.
