For many older adults in the Bay Area, public transportation is more than a way to get from one place to another. It’s a connection to work, medical appointments, friends, family and the communities they call home. AARP believes no one should lose their independence simply because they can’t afford or no longer want to drive.
That’s why AARP endorsed the Bay Area Regional Transit Measure on the November 2026 ballot. The measure would provide dedicated funding to help prevent major service cuts throughout the region.
But the importance of transit is best understood through the people who use it.
In a new series of videos, we joined three AARP members as they traveled around their Bay Area communities and shared what reliable, affordable transportation means to them.
“Transportation is vital as we age. Having transit independence is so important for our generation.”
Amy, Orinda
“My VTA bus ticket is $1. Compare that to paying $6.79 to fill my car up the other day.”
Kris, San Jose
“My life has improved because I have access to transit. I no longer have to worry about driving, parking and paying for gas.”
Joanna, El Cerrito
Their experiences reflect why accessible transportation matters as we age. Transit can help older adults remain independent, manage transportation costs and stay connected to the people and places that matter to them.
The Regional Transit Measure would raise approximately $980 million annually for 14 years through a half-cent sales tax increase in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties and a one-cent increase in San Francisco. The funding would help prevent major service reductions across Bay Area transit systems.
As you cast your ballot from home or prepare to vote on Election Day, we encourage you to vote YES on the Regional Transit Measure and help keep the Bay Area moving.
You can also help spread the word. Share Joanna, Amy and Kris’s stories with your friends, family and community, and pledge your support for reliable, affordable regional transit.
Together, we can help build a Bay Area where people of all ages have the freedom to get where they need to go.
