Help Shine a Light on a Community Hero

Nominate a volunteer for California’s 2026 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service

Across California, extraordinary things are happening—often because one committed volunteer decided to step up. It might be the neighbor who delivers meals week after week. The advocate who shows up for families navigating aging or caregiving. Or the organizer who turns compassion into action and brings people together when it matters most.

If you know a volunteer like this—someone age 50 or older who is making a real difference in their community, now is your chance to celebrate them.

AARP California is now accepting nominations for the 2026 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service, the organization’s most prestigious volunteer honor. The award recognizes Californians who are sharing their time, experience, talents, and skills to improve the lives of others and inspire more people to serve. The California nomination period is May 1, 2026 – July 15, 2026.

Rooted in a Legacy of Service

The Andrus Award is named for AARP’s founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, whose lifelong commitment to service was guided by a simple but powerful belief: ordinary people can do extraordinary things when they serve others. That belief continues to shape AARP’s mission and its longstanding commitment to volunteerism.

Each year, the Andrus Award honors one outstanding volunteer in each participating state whose efforts reflect that legacy that strengthens communities, lifts neighbors, and sparks hope and connection.

Why Your Nomination Matters

Many volunteers never seek recognition. They simply see a need and respond. A nomination for the Andrus Award is a way to say thank you—and to ensure their story inspires others.

The 2026 California Andrus Award recipient will be officially honored by AARP California and will receive a $1,000 donation made to the nonprofit of their choice, recognizing both their service and the causes they care about.
