AARP Los Angeles Names the Andrus Opportunity Award

Lincoln High School graduate, Bryan Arce Gonzalez, has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Andrus Opportunity Award for Community Service.

Named in honor of Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, former principal of Lincoln High School and founder of AARP, the Andrus Opportunity Award recognizes a graduating senior who demonstrates academic excellence, leadership, community service, and a commitment to pursuing higher education. The award includes a $5,000 scholarship to support the student's college journey.

Bryan Arce Gonzalez stood out among a talented pool of applicants for his exceptional achievements, leadership, and dedication to serving his community. He graduates with an impressive 4.9 GPA and will attend the University of California, Los Angeles this fall, where he plans to major in Physiological Science and pursue a career in medicine.
 
Driven by his passion for healthcare, Bryan co-founded the Medical Society at Lincoln High School, creating opportunities for fellow students to explore careers in the medical field. Beyond academics, Bryan has demonstrated a strong commitment to community service. Through organizations such as Youth United for Community Action (YUCA) and the Lincoln Heights Tutorial Program's "Increase the Peace" initiative, he has worked to bring community members together through neighborhood cleanups, beautification projects, and events that promote unity and violence prevention. His efforts have helped create positive spaces for young people and strengthen community connections throughout Lincoln Heights.

Bryan has taken advantage of rigorous coursework, dual-enrollment opportunities, and enrichment programs to prepare for his future goals. His experiences have reinforced his commitment to becoming a physician and serving communities like the one that helped shape him.

Bryan embodies the values of service and perseverance that Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus championed throughout her career.
