AARP California Delivers a Key Win at the Capitol
AARP California staff and volunteers recently secured a significant advocacy victory at the State Capitol, demonstrating the impact of grassroots action and member engagement.
On June 9, AARP helped defeat ACA 9, a proposed constitutional amendment that would have removed telecommunications oversight from the California Public Utilities Commission and weakened longstanding consumer protections. The proposal could have threatened access to landline services, which remain especially important for older adults during emergencies and natural disasters.

AARP mobilized activists, resulting in more than 2,000 letters sent to lawmakers and organized a Day of Action, during which Capitol Response Team volunteers held more than 30 meetings with legislators and staff. These coordinated efforts helped stop the measure in committee, though AARP will remain vigilant if it returns next year.
