According to a recent AARP survey, North Carolina voters strongly support a state retirement savings program and most agree that elected officials should support legislation that enables small businesses to offer their employees a retirement savings plan.
More than a third of North Carolinians surveyed say they feel anxious about having enough money to live comfortably after they retire, and most (80%) worry that cost of living expenses will eat up their retirement savings. One in six voters surveyed say that their employer does not offer a retirement savings plan.
North Carolina voters believe that saving for retirement is important, and they are concerned that some state residents might end up relying on public assistance programs because they did not save enough. If a state retirement savings plan were offered, a majority of these voters say they would take advantage of it.
Interviews were conducted May 1-6, 2019. The sample of 605 voters was drawn from a registered voter list. Half (303) of the interviews were conducted via landline phone, and half (302) were conducted via cell phone. All data are weighted by age and gender according to April 2019 North Carolina voter database statistics.
