WASHINGTON—AARP Foundation President Lisa Marsh Ryerson issued the following statement in response to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) Consensus Study on Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults: Opportunities for the Health Care System:
“I’m pleased the AARP Foundation sponsored study by NASEM confirms the connection between social isolation or loneliness and death, heart disease, and depression for older adults. It also finds that the health care system and community-based organizations have a critical role to play in intervening.
“We also know social isolation, like other social determinants of health, must be addressed to increase economic opportunity and wellbeing for low-income older adults.
“AARP Foundation developed Connect2Affect, which helps individuals evaluate isolation risk, reach out to others who may be isolated or disengaged, and find practical ways to reconnect to the community. AARP Foundation works with senior living communities to connect older adults who are more likely to be socially isolated. Our Connected Communities helps older adults connect to activities and resources in their communities using smart speakers in their rooms. We look forward to our continued work with community-based organizations and health care partners.”
