AARP Collaborating with REALTORS® to Educate Homebuyers about Finding Livable Neighborhoods

Integrating the AARP Livability Index: Great Neighborhoods for All Ages tool into the Realtors Property Resource® website and mobile app makes it easier for REALTORS® to help clients consider a variety of needs, including aging, when searching for a home.

Through this collaboration between AARP and the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), REALTORS® can help perspective homebuyers and renters see valuable information about a community’s ability to meet the needs of residents of all ages in many aspects of community life including transportation, health care and civic engagement.

The AARP Livability Index is a robust, publicly available tool that takes national data and breaks it down by neighborhood to rate key factors of what makes a place livable. The Index measures community elements within seven categories – housing, neighborhood, transportation, environment, health, engagement, and opportunity characteristics – evaluating current conditions and policies and programs that change over time. By scoring each category the Index provides users with a complex picture of how supportive a community is and will be as a person ages.

In this work, AARP aims to educate NAR members, their clients and the communities they serve about the important features and services that help people remain in their homes and communities as they age.
