The Dynamism of Short-Term Savings
The health and economic ramifications of COVID-19 have increased the urgency of finding and scaling solutions to boost the financial stability and security of US households. Research from the AARP Public Policy Institute demonstrates that being able to build even modest liquid savings can help buffer individuals in times of financial uncertainty. And new findings from Aspen Institute Financial Security Program and the Consumer Insights Collaborative make clear that people’s ability to build, use, and replenish savings helps families be financially resilient against shocks and allows them to invest in family well-being and economic mobility.
Which Older Adults Have Access to America's Most Livable Neighborhoods?
Do older adults in the US have equal access to highly livable neighborhoods? What makes a neighborhood livable, and to what extent does access vary by income, race, or ethnicity? In this special session, a new report from the Joint Center for Housing studies at Harvard University and AARP is released which examines the AARP Livability Index and finds that access to the most livable communities is not equitable, especially for older adults, and particularly for lower-income older adults and older communities of color.

Affordable In-Law Suites and Backyard Bungalows
Only July 17, 2019, AARP national housing experts hosted a livestream event sharing insights into the latest ADU design options and stories from families who are taking advantage of this growing and innovative solution. National designers, community leaders, and aging experts also shared insights on how to take advantage of this affordable housing option. As a part of the event, AARP released an ADU design catalog to help homeowners, designers and others navigate how to create this new space in their home.
Future of Transportation
The transportation sector is experiencing major disruption; in fact, it's only the beginning. And, autonomous vehicles are just one potential disruptor in a shift involving the entire transportation ecosystem. Change, however, can either unfold haphazardly with negative consequences, or we can harness it through sound policy and planning to realize a desired vision. AARP policy thought leader Jana Lynott will articulate a vision of transportation to manage the disruptive forces, leading to a more equitable and sustainable transportation future.
Employee Perspectives on Emergency Savings Programs
The AARP Public Policy Institute fielded a national survey to test the appeal of a payroll-deduction rainy day savings program among employees. The survey also identified the program features that are most important to workers. On September 20, 2018, leading behavioral economist Warren Cormier reviewed the survey findings. A discussion with providers and policy experts followed.
Are Communities Becoming More Livable?
PPI presents findings from analysis of new data incorporated into an updated version of the AARP Livability Index, a tool that measures aspects of community life that best support people at any life stage, and showcases the features and functions of the tool. The event also includes a panel of speakers who discuss their efforts to improve livability in their communities.

Solutions Forum: Social Isolation- An Important Health and Public Health Issue and a Significant Cost to Medicare
Social isolation has been shown to lead to poor health and even premature death. New research just published by the AARP Public Policy Institute finds that isolation also increases health care costs: a lack of social contacts among older adults is associated with an estimated $6.7 billion in additional Medicare spending annually.
This event, hosted by the AARP Public Policy Institute, was a discussion of social isolation’s effects on individuals’ health, its impact on Medicare spending, and potential policy solutions to address social isolation and its consequences. In addition, panelists discussed how social isolation became recognized as a major public health concern in the UK and how the issue can be better recognized in the US. Also discussed were current efforts by the AARP Foundation and Medicare Advantage plans to address the issue.

Business and health care leaders discussed how their industries can more effectively utilize nurses to improve care and contain costs. Dr. Mark McClellan of the Brookings Institution and former administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) provided the keynote address.

PPI released Raising Expectations 2014: A State Scorecard on Long-Term Services and Supports for Older Adults, People with Physical Disabilities, and Family Caregivers. The Scorecard ranks states on their effectiveness delivering LTSS.
Solutions Forum: What’s Preventing Prevention?
Preventive services were a priority in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which required that a set of services be available to consumers with no cost sharing. This has improved access for some people to some services. But persistent barriers for consumers are limiting the utilization of preventive services. Cosponsored by the Alliance for Health Reform.

2017 CARE Act Summit
November 8-9, 2017
This summit celebrated the CARE Act’s many successes thus far, shared learnings and highlighted promising practices from the law’s implementation, and discussed potential next steps in research and advocacy. Participants included AARP staff, the research community, family caregivers, health systems and hospitals, policymakers, managed care plans and other key stakeholders.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the country's population aged 65 and over is projected to be more than 83 million in 2050 -- almost double the estimated population of 43 million in 2012. This Forum will examine how the growing, greying labor force impacts workplaces and economic and health security, including retirement savings efforts and systems such as Social Security and Medicare. The discussion also will explore what it means to age productively and healthily, with a particular emphasis on the value of working, volunteering and keeping cognitive skills sharp.

Care Coordination in Managed Long-Term Services and Supports
Older people and adults with disabilities, particularly those with care needs, can benefit from care coordination. Care coordinators are typically nurses or social workers who can help with tasks such as monitoring chronic health conditions, connecting them to social supports, conducting assessments, and writing plans of care. The field is changing rapidly as many states move to or expand Medicaid managed care for its populations needing long-term services and supports (LTSS). Details
