On FCBD, which takes place on May 2 this year, comic book stores give away special issues created just for the event. This year’s offerings include a cute Aquaman spin-off called Aquamanatee, a Batman and Superman team-up with Sonic the Hedgehog, and a special 85th anniversary tribute from Archie Comics. Most stores offer discounts on purchases on the date. Leftover free issues from the event can be picked up throughout the month.

While grills are expected to be on sale for 10 to 30 percent off, “accessories offer even better chances to save, with discounts between 15 and 50 percent,” one expert says.

Look for sales from brands such as Casper, Saatva and Tempur-Pedic. And you don’t have to wait until Memorial Day weekend (May 23–25) to find deals — many retailers kick off mattress sales in early May.

“Retailers know homeowners are preparing for outdoor projects, renovations and maintenance, so they roll out promotions on everything from lawn care equipment to power tools,” one expert says. You’ll see savings of 20 to 40 percent off.
