With the holidays fast approaching, it’s time to think about gifts for your grandchildren. You can fall back on the old reliables — popular toys for the younger grandchildren, gift cards or clothing for the older ones — but here are five ideas that are a bit off the beaten path.
For the budding scientist or astronaut: Lego’s Women of NASA. Lego regularly issues various commemorative sets, and here’s one that focuses on women who have played a key role at the space agency. In the set: Lego versions of Sally Ride (the first woman in space), Mae Jemison (the first African American woman in space), Margaret Hamilton (software lead designer for the Apollo 11 moon landing mission) and Nancy Grace Roman (a major figure in the Hubble Space Telescope development).
For the one day college-bound: A 529 educational savings account. Money donated to this account, as you might expect, can be used to pay for college. This can be the gift that keeps on giving over the years, as the balance grows tax-deferred (and can be withdrawn tax-free if used to pay for qualified college expenses).
Something not stamped out of a factory: Online craft sales site Etsy offers hundreds of selections from various artists (it’s also a good place for the vice-versa gift from grandchildren to grandparents).
For grandchildren who value experiences over things: Concert tickets or group memberships fit the bill. Concert ticket giant Ticketmaster sells gift cards online. (AARP also is offering Ticketmaster/Live Nation discounts to see Blue Man Group).
Something sentimental: Home site the Spruce offers six ideas for sentimental gifts for older grandchildren, including a family photo book or an heirloom.
