The fashion world is having a minute — both in reality and fiction.

Hot on the heels of legendary Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour stepping down from her role after 37 years, Disney’s 20th Century Studios just announced that The Devil Wears Prada 2 has begun filming led by major veteran actors — some returning and some new.

Three-time Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep, 76, will reprise her role as demanding editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly, who heads the fictional fashion publication Runway magazine. It has been suggested that Streep’s role is loosely based on Wintour’s persona; the book the movie is based on was written by Lauren Weisberger, who served as Wintour’s personal assistant from 1999 to 2000. Of the suggested similarities, Wintour told the BBC in 2024 that she’d leave it up to the audience and to the people she has worked with to decide.

Stanley Tucci, 64, will also return as trusted Runway art director Nigel Kipling.

Tucci spoke to AARP  in 2024 about his dietary habits, oral cancer diagnosis and energy levels since turning 60. “I think I probably don’t eat quite as much as I used to because I’m older and I’m healthier. ... I don’t have the energy that I used to have, so I don’t need to eat as much.” But, he adds, he still has “a  very fast metabolism, and part of that is just who I am, and part of it is from the results of the radiation.”

One big addition to the cast for the sequel: Emmy Award-winning actor and Oscar-winning screenplay writer Kenneth Branagh, 64. He will play Priestly’s latest husband. Branagh talked to AARP in 2022 about his screenplay for the 2021 coming-of-age drama Belfast, as well as life lessons he’s learned as he’s gotten older. “Age brought the sense that, regardless of the result, the voices from that time needed to be heard, acknowledged. The years also bring compassion — for ourselves, and others. The quickest route to that is humor,” he told AARP entertainment editor Timothy Appelo.

So what is this sequel all about? First, a refresher: In 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada, journalist Andrea Sachs, played by Anne Hathaway (who is also in the new film), arrives at Runway magazine fresh out of college and is thrust into the ever-changing world of fashion while attempting to deal with Priestly’s frequently unreasonable demands.

According to Variety , the new film will focus on Priestly navigating major shifts in traditional media, which will pit her against her former assistant Emily Charlton, played again by Emily Blunt. Charlton is now an executive for a luxury group with access to advertising funds that would help Priestly stay afloat.

The sequel was teased on Instagram recently. It featured the widely recognized red pumps with devil-horn heels, along with famous lines from the first film. “The Devil Wears Prada 2. Now in production,” the caption reads.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 will premiere in theaters on May 1, 2026.
