“I’ve always applied blush this way!”
“Tinted moisturizer won’t cover my brown spots!”
“This is the only eyeliner brand I’ve ever used.”
“I can’t wear sunscreen with my makeup; it doesn’t work!”
Getting out of your cosmetic comfort zone is not easy. How do I know? I’m a beauty editor, stylist and personal shopper who specializes in women over 50. I typically hear statements like those above. Though many women are fascinated by how-tos on YouTube, they trust their tried-and-true skills, the same old familiar products and their 5X magnifying mirror more.
The concept of a “makeover” is down, and self-confidence is up. All great! But makeup positivity doesn’t mean you can’t change, improve or update things. Here are the top mistakes women are making and what to do instead:

1. The mistake: Thinking full-coverage foundation hides all.
Your skin texture changes with age. It gets thinner, drier, saggier, lined and adorned with rough spots and discolorations. This sends many women over 50 racing for long-wear matte makeup and full-coverage foundations. Some even take it a step further and add powder to “set” the look. Big mistake! You’re blanking out imperfections but also any radiance and creating cakey makeup that will happily settle in expression lines and emphasize wrinkles.
The solution: Time to pivot. Instead of aiming for a total eraser job, ease imperfections into soft focus with a skin tint or dewy foundation. They won’t smother your skin, but they'll apply a blurring effect to discolorations.
Here’s how to choose. To boost dry-lined skin with minimal imperfections, select a tint like Milani Conceal + Perfect Blur Out Skin Tint ($16, target.com) or L’Oréal Paris Lumi Skin Glow Tint ($17, cvs.com). The new category of “tints” has a silkier feel and more color than a tinted moisturizer.
For more coverage and extra radiance, opt for a dewy formula foundation like Estee Lauder Futurist Skin Tint Serum Foundation SPF20 ($55, ulta.com) or Make Up For Ever HD Skin Hydra Glow Hydrating Foundation with Hyaluronic Acid ($47, sephora.com). These have a serum-like formula and bridge the gap between tints and traditional foundation, providing buildable coverage with a believable skin-like finish. You’ll never look back.

2. The mistake: Using one concealer for eyes and face.
All facial discolorations are not equal. There is no way dark spots, broken capillaries, random blemishes and your under-eye area can use the same kind of camouflage.
The solution: Eyes benefit from a moisturizing light-reflecting concealer with a tapered doe-foot applicator for accuracy and blendability in the delicate eye area like the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Radiant Cream Concealer with Peptides + Antioxidants ($14, target).
Facial discolorations do better with a creamy but opaque formula in a firm tube or stick format like the NYX Professional Makeup Pro Fix Stick Color Correcting Concealers ($9, ulta.com).
The shade matters. For the face, stick to colors close to your skin tone and in sync with your face makeup. When it comes to eye discolorations, look for a shade in your skin tone with a warm golden or peachy tint, or a subtle color corrector like the Revlon Glimmer Brightening Concealer in 115 Yellow Corrector or 145 Light to Medium ($13, cvs.com). Any concealer with a golden or peach undertone counteracts blue/purple discolorations at the inner eye corner near the nose and under the eyes. To keep face and eye camouflage on target, always apply them after face makeup and blend them with a dab-tap technique instead of a swipe.

3. The mistake: Overdoing brows or neglecting them.
Brows frame your eyes and give your face expression. Some women resist brow makeup, hoping their bangs and glasses hide their skimpy, straggly, over-plucked brows. Others focus on pencils and powders and try to maximize their brows. They wind up with a harsh, overpowering and frankly fake look. Neither choice is flattering.
