More Than 220,000 Ford F-150 Trucks Recalled for Fuel Tank Risk

Some 2023-2027 pickups have fuel tanks that may leak, cause a stall or detach while driving

Ford Motor Company has recalled 223,472 of its popular F-150 pickup trucks because their fuel tanks may not be properly secured, potentially causing the tanks to leak fuel or detach while driving.

A detached fuel tank could create a road hazard and increase the risk of a crash. Leaking fuel could also cause the engine to stall and increases the risk of a fire, according to the safety recall report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall covers certain Ford F-150 trucks manufactured between Jan. 4, 2023, and Aug. 27, 2026. Ford estimates that 1 percent of the recalled vehicles have the defect.

What causes the problem?

The front fuel tank is held in place by straps. In some recalled trucks, the straps may not be properly secured to the vehicle’s frame, allowing the tank to become loose.

Ford said camera systems used to verify proper assembly of the fuel tank straps were not in continuous use during the affected production period. The problems resulting from the tank straps could occur without warning.

As of Aug. 27, Ford was aware of 16 warranty claims related to the issue. The company said it had received no reports of crashes or injuries connected to the faulty tank straps.

What F-150 owners should do

Ford and Lincoln dealers will inspect the fuel tank straps and replace them if necessary, free of charge. Replacement straps are the same type as the original components but will be properly secured to the vehicle’s frame.

Notification letters are expected to be mailed to owners beginning Sept. 21 and completed by Sept. 28.

Owners can contact Ford customer service at 866-436-7332. Ford’s number for the recall is 26S69; the NHTSA campaign number is 26V578.
