AARP is deeply concerned by the level of Medicaid reductions included in the House and Senate conference agreement on the fiscal year 2006 budget resolution. Cuts of that magnitude are likely to result in greater risk to vulnerable Americans and additional cost shifting onto a health care system that is already seriously compromised.
It is also critical that any Medicaid Commission include a balanced representation of all stakeholders as it considers the full ramifications of proposed changes and examines Medicaid's role in the broader health care system. It is important that this Commission has the time needed to do its work properly and include the viewpoints of all stakeholders if it is it to be effective and credible.
One in every six Americans relies on Medicaid, and they generally have no other options for obtaining the care they need. We urge Congress and any Commission that is created to proceed with the utmost caution and to work with all stakeholders to ensure that any changes made to this critical safety net program do not have unintended consequences that harm some of our most vulnerable neighbors and family members.
