New AARP, AMA Health System Reform Ads Call for Support of Senate Action
Spot: “Tell your senators we need health reform now.”
WASHINGTON— Today, AARP and the American Medical Association (AMA) launched a new television ad in support of moving forward on health reform legislation currently being debated by the Senate. The ad highlights how health system reform would provide much-needed relief to millions of older Americans who still face challenges accessing affordable, quality health care by protecting guaranteed Medicare benefits and consumers’ choice of doctors.
“We need concrete improvements to our broken health care system,” said AARP Executive Vice President Nancy LeaMond. “Current legislation will shrink the dreaded prescription drug doughnut hole and sharply limit health insurers’ discriminatory practices. We support the good work of the Senate, and as the debate continues, we believe this legislation can be improved even further.”
“America’s patients and physicians need to know the facts about health reform, and this ad conveys important information to seniors and baby boomers about the benefits of the Senate health reform bill,” said AMA President J. James Rohack, M.D. “Patients and physicians will benefit from an improved health system, and that’s what AMA is working for.”
The new TV spot is the second AARP/AMA ad featuring a physician and a “spin doctor,” with the physician emphasizing what health reform will do and encouraging viewers to contact their senators to act on health reform now. The ad will air on television stations through Wednesday, December 23 in Arkansas, Louisiana, Maine, Nebraska and North Dakota.
AARP, along with the AMA and 51 other health care and advocacy organizations, also launched a print ad today, thanking Senators Baucus, Dodd, Nelson, Reid and Rockefeller for their commitment to make prescription drugs more affordable for people in Medicare by closing the Part D “doughnut hole.” The ad will run today in Capitol Hill newspapers.
