AARP's Travel Trends survey examines how adults, with a focus on those age 50 and older, experience travel and the role it plays in their lives. Conducted annually since 2015, the research findings offer detailed views of how travel supports well being, connection, and growth, and serve as key resources for understanding travel preferences among older Americans in the U.S.

About the AARP Travel Trends Series

Travel is central to the ways in which people manage stress, preserve their wellbeing, and connect with family and friends. As people age, they increasingly seek travel experiences that feel restorative, engaging, and accessible.

The research includes travel trends, as well as focused research on caregiving and travel, technology use, and travel challenges. AARP’s annual travel trends tracks how expectations and experiences surrounding travel are evolving; focusing on shifts in motivations, barriers to travel, planning, travel destinations, and modes of travel. The research also highlights how disabilities and health conditions shape travel experiences for adults age 50 and older – at airports, on the plane, and at their destinations.

AARP’s early travel research focused on boomers and later expanded to include all travelers age 50 and older. Together, these insights provide an understanding of the evolving needs and preferences of older travelers in the U.S.
