Video: Providing Older Residents With Free Wi-Fi

Learn about a 2025 AARP Community Challenge project in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

LOCATION: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

GRANTEE: Philly Community Wireless

Many low-income older adults face both cost and connectivity barriers that limit their ability to access essential online services. Using an AARP Community Challenge grant with funding support from Microsoft, Philly Community Wireless partnered with HACE, a nonprofit community development organization, to install free, building-wide Wi‑Fi at Somerset Villas, a 99-unit residence for individuals with disabilities and low-income adults age 62 or older. Residents now have reliable internet access, eliminating a monthly expense and strengthening their connection to health resources, community programs and everyday services.
