Video: 'Activating' Public Spaces in Jackson, Mississippi

Learn about this winning project from a 2019 AARP Community Challenge grantee

LOCATION: Jackson, Mississippi
GRANTEE: City of Jackson

The city’s Open Streets Program transforms underutilized streets, alleys and parking areas into vibrant public spaces. The program uses accessible design principles to engage residents and encourage people of all ages to interact with one another. The grant was used in a key area of the downtown to create a parklet with a large mural backdrop and a ground mural crosswalk to help slow traffic and improve pedestrian safety.

  • The AARP Community Challenge funds "quick-action" projects that build momentum for local change to improve livability for people of all ages.
