Autonomous Passenger Shuttles Take Seniors Around Detroit

Watch a video about this winning project from a 2019 AARP Community Challenge grantee

LOCATION: Detroit, Michigan
GRANTEE: The Literacy Center

Designed to develop an innovative transportation model for seniors, veterans and the disabled, this pilot project deployed an electric autonomous passenger shuttle to operate on a 3-mile radius route within a community that consisted of multiple hospitals, a Veterans Administration Hospital complex, and senior housing. The project aimed to improve mobility services by providing a low or no cost electric shuttle service for medical appointments, pharmacy pick-ups, local banking, and community grocery shopping.

The AARP Community Challenge funds "quick-action" projects that build momentum for local change to improve livability for people of all ages.
