Video: Helping Low-Income Seniors in Chicago With Comprehensive Renovations

Learn about this winning project from a 2019 AARP Community Challenge grantee

LOCATION: Chicago, Illinois
GRANTEE: Elevate Energy

powered by embedly

Elevate Energy developed a pilot program to help low-income senior homeowners make comprehensive renovations to their two-unit buildings. The improvements included making accessibility upgrades and addressing deferred maintenance which will ultimately make the buildings less costly and stressful to operate, and add a new source of income for homeowners. The program used grant funding to demonstrate to leaders and potential funders that it is possible to help low-income senior homeowners age in place, add affordable housing units, and stop the demise of 2-unit buildings all at once

  • The AARP Community Challenge funds "quick-action" projects that build momentum for local change to improve livability for people of all ages.
