Video: Providing a Path in Saco, Maine

A 2018 AARP Community Challenge project rolls out an accessible solution for using the beach

LOCATION: Saco, Maine
GRANTEE: Age Friendly Saco

Although Saco has two public beaches, residents who use wheelchairs, canes or walkers couldn't get to the water due to the lack of a stable surface on which to walk or roll. An AARP grant funded ADA-compliant beach mats — which make moving across the sand easier for all beachgoers — provide a nonslip, semi-rigid roll-out pathway from the handicapped parking spaces to the high-water mark on the beach.

  • The AARP Community Challenge funds “quick-action” projects that build momentum for local change to improve livability for people of all ages.
