Award-Winning Policy Now Video Series Highlights PPI Research

This year, 2024 marks the third season of the award-winning AARP Public Policy Institute’s video series, AARP Policy Now. The on-line series first debuted in June 2021. Its created and produced by Kim Sedmak, AARP’s Public Policy Institute Director of Outreach along with AARP Studios and the AARP Public Policy Institute’s Digital Team; Mary Boyle, Meredith Courville, Anne Singer & Lexi Moore.  

The series launched showcasing an AARP Public Policy Institute report, Paying Family Caregivers to Provide Care During the Pandemic – and Beyond  debuting with an interview featuring the AARP Public Policy Institute SVP and Executive Director, Susan Reinhard. Since then,  Sedmak and team have produced more than 20 segments all narrated by broadcast journalist, Diane Roberts. Using a mix of graphics, and AARP Public Policy Institute expert interviews and other footage, the series is designed to “lift policy off the page.” These are now produced monthly and distributed via social media.  

Since its inception, the series has been awarded numerous accolades including a 2023 Silver Telly Award for Best On-Line Video Journalism Series. Other awards include two Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts Communicator Awards for a Campaign or Series for On-Line Video and An Award of Distinction for Campaigns & Series – News & Informational for Social.

Sedmak’s background in broadcast journalism makes producing this series a natural fit. The videos explain high-level research findings from AARP Public Policy Institute reports in clear, accessible ways while also promoting the policy team’s thought leadership. The videos together have received more than 110k views on AARP.org, over 521k views on Facebook, and more than 4.3 million views on Twitter.
