Your Chronic Illness Doesn’t Have to Define You

Making the most of every day—even when those days aren’t easy

Nick was overwhelmed when he was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a chronic lung disease that has no cure. A retired teacher and high school coach, Nick was used to being fit and active, running four miles a day, five times a week. But the disease left him feeling worn out—even talking on the phone for too long was difficult. Once Nick learned the seriousness of his condition and that IPF keeps getting worse, he knew he wanted to discuss ways to be proactive with his doctor.

Nick learned that FDA-approved medicines are available to help manage the disease. He also learned that pulmonary rehabilitation is commonly recommended, as it may help patients manage shortness of breath (a common symptom of IPF) through overall body conditioning, exercise training and breathing skills. This information armed Nick to face IPF, and with the support of family and friends, he says he is living a happy life despite the challenges the disease brings.

Beyond what Nick does for his physical health, he focuses on the good things in his life—what he can do instead of what he can’t—to maintain a positive mindset so he can make the most of each day.


A few tips Nick found helpful in staying positive while living with a chronic disease are:


1. Discuss ways to manage the condition with your doctor.

Share with your doctor what is important to you and what motivates you so together you can develop a plan for living with your condition, which may include medicines, pulmonary rehabilitation and oxygen therapy.
 

2. Spend time with family and friends.

“From teaching and coaching for 39 years in my community, I am blessed to have close friends and family who support me,” says Nick. Focus on what and who is most important; keep up with the people who mean the most to you. And don’t forget it’s never too late to meet new people. You can connect with others who have the same or a similar condition through pulmonary rehab or in-person or online support groups. Nick says it was helpful to read about others’ experiences with his disease, especially how they’ve adjusted their lifestyles to enjoy their lives.
 

3. Find a hobby or activity that suits you.

Every case of IPF is different, and so is each person living with IPF. Although Nick doesn’t run anymore, he enjoys walks around a lake near his home. Your physical activity may be more or less limited than Nick’s, so speak with your doctor about what is safe and appropriate for you. You may also find new hobbies and activities that you enjoy. Take up painting or writing or something else that you’ve always wanted to try.
 

4. Try to focus on what makes you happy and what you are thankful for.

It’s okay to feel overwhelmed or down in the face of a chronic disease, but try not` to let negativity overshadow the good things in your life. Though this may seem easier said than done, try to focus on the present moment and take steps that may help you feel more proactive in your journey. Nick says he is grateful for his family, friends, community and care team, as he knows those relationships are especially important when living with chronic illness.
