Authentication Description: AARP is adding an additional layer of security (“Phone Authentication”) to online accounts you may have on our various websites, such as aarp.org or aarp.org/rewards. Going forward, in order to edit your email address or date or birth, or change your password, in Account Manager, or change your password anonymously using the Forgot Password feature, you will be asked to verify your identity via an authentication code sent to a verified phone number associated with your account. We will send the authentication code via SMS or call and provide you the authentication code verbally (at your election). Entering the authentication code will allow you to complete the requested action. Your phone number will only be used in accordance with these to these Phone Authentication Terms and Conditions (the "Terms"). We may extend phone authentication to additional activities beyond those listed above in future.
User Opt In: If you choose to provide a mobile phone number for authentication, and/or choose to receive your code by SMS/text, you agree to opt-in for mobile authentication and be subject to these Terms as applicable. The mobile messaging service used by AARP to communicate with you, if you elect SMS/text communication, cannot randomly or sequentially generate telephone numbers, requires human intervention for AARP's mobile messages to be initiated, and thus AARP's mobile messages are not sent to you by an automatic telephone dialing system ("ATDS" or "autodialer").
Cost and Frequency: Message and data rates may apply. Phone Authentication will only occur at such times as you elect to receive an authentication code by phone or text.
MMS: You will be sent SMS MTs if your mobile device does not support MMS messaging.
AARP Warranty: AARP will not be liable for any delays or failures in the receipt of any mobile messages connected with Phone Authentication. Delivery of mobile messages is subject to effective transmission from your wireless service provider/network operator, and is outside of AARP's control. Privacy Policy: AARP will not use your number for any purpose other than Phone Authentication (unless you have separately provided your number to AARP for other purposes). AARP will use and share your information with third parties in order to improve or fix the functionality of the Phone Authentication and to transmit your mobile messages and respond to you, if necessary. AARP DOES NOT SELL, RENT, LOAN, TRADE, LEASE OR OTHERWISE TRANSFER FOR PROFIT ANY PHONE NUMBERS OR CUSTOMER INFORMATION COLLECTED THROUGH PHONE AUTHENTICATION TO ANY THIRD PARTY. Nonetheless, AARP reserves the right at all times to disclose any information as necessary to satisfy any law, regulation or governmental request, to avoid liability, or to protect AARP's rights or property. When you complete forms online or otherwise provide AARP information in connection with Phone Authentication, you agree to provide accurate, complete, and true information. You agree not to use a false or misleading name or a name that you are not authorized to use. If AARP, in its sole discretion, believes that any such information is untrue, inaccurate, or incomplete, or you have opted to use Phone Authentication for an ulterior purpose, AARP may refuse you access and pursue any appropriate legal remedies.
This Privacy Policy is strictly limited to Phone Authentication and has no effect on any other privacy policy(ies) that may govern the relationship between you and AARP in other contexts.
Disputes: In the event that there is a dispute, claim or controversy between you and AARP, or between you and any third-party acting on AARP's behalf in connection with the Phone Authentication, arising out of or relating to federal or state statutory claims, common law claims, these Terms, or the breach, termination, enforcement, interpretation or validity thereof, it shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of the Washington, DC without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules (whether of Washington, DC or any other jurisdiction), which would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than Washington, DC.
Miscellaneous: You warrant and represent to AARP that you have all necessary rights, power, and authority to agree to these Terms and perform your obligations hereunder, and nothing contained in this Agreement or in the performance of such obligations will place you in breach of any other contract or obligation. The failure of either party to exercise in any respect any right provided for herein will not be deemed a waiver of any further rights hereunder. If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision will be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary so that this Agreement will otherwise remain in full force and effect and enforceable. Any new features, changes, updates or improvements of Phone Authentication shall be subject to these Terms unless explicitly stated otherwise in writing. AARP reserves the right to change these Terms from time to time. Any updates to these Terms shall be communicated to you. You acknowledge your responsibility to review these Terms from time to time and to be aware of any such changes. By continuing to participate in Phone Authentication after any such changes, you accept these Terms, as modified.
