The recent recession hit people of all ages hard, but for many low-income older Americans, it’s harder to recover. After raising children, working and planning for their retirement, they cannot make ends meet. More than 20 million low-income people today lack the financial resources to ensure they can meet their basic needs.
Like other age groups, older people are facing job loss, high foreclosure rates and rising bankruptcy. Their unemployment rate has doubled since December 2007, and when they lose jobs they are more likely than any other age group to be unemployed for six months or more.
