AARP in Your State: New YorkConcerned about the rising price of prescription drugs, two-thirds of AARP members on New York's Long Island worry about their ability to pay for needed medications over the next two years. This late 2005 telephone survey of 800 AARP New York members in Nassau and Suffolk counties, home of the state's largest concentration of AARP members, gauges their support for proposed consumer protection measures regarding prescription drugs.
Of those surveyed...
- 75 percent say they support a bulk-purchasing program for prescription drugs that would pass the savings on to those without medication coverage
- 80 percent support legislation that would require drug manufacturers to report how much they spend on marketing practices such as providing physicians with meals or other gifts
- 87 percent say it is important for New York to provide access to information comparing the safety and effectiveness of prescription drugs
