This AARP Public Policy Institute Issue Paper explores the implications of mandating state health professional licensing boards to implement procedures that would require all licensees to demonstrate their continuing competence as a condition of relicensure. The authors present a broad range of research questions that must be addressed to enable state licensing boards to design a new regulatory model that would include continuing competency requirements. Finally, they propose a framework for considering next steps and offer recommendations to advance the objective of strengthening and improving requirements for licensing health professionals.
