Caring for All – A Multicultural Look at Caregiving

Friday, May 31, 2013

12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

  • Dr. Lyda Arevalo-Flechas
  • Co-pastor Susie C. Owens
  • Lily Liu, Brand story advisor, AARP
  • Rocky Egusquiza, vice president, Multicultural Markets, AARP (Moderator)

More than 3 in 10 U.S. households have had at least one person serve as an unpaid family caregiver within the past 12 months. But caregiving can show up differently in African American/Black, Hispanic and Asian families. Hispanic caregivers tend to be younger, African American caregivers are more likely to help manage their loved one's finances and half of Asian caregivers are male.

This session focused on the different needs and experiences of multicultural caregivers, and offered AARP resources and tools to better assist them as they face the daily challenges and unexpected joys of this shared experience.

As many of us are finding out firsthand, it can be more difficult to lose weight as we get older, and for some of us, it’s a daily challenge to keep excess pounds from piling on. After age 50, our metabolism slows and we lose muscle mass, so our bodies get busy storing fat. What can you do to live healthy and feel your best — and prevent disease — when nature seems to work against you? That’s where the AARP New American Diet comes in. Based on the AARP-National Institutes of Health 25-year-long study, the just-published AARP New American Diet emphasizes the basics of healthy whole foods, plus offers startling new information about what you can do every day to lose weight and help reduce the risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

At this session, author John Whyte, chief medical expert at the Discovery Channel, and a panel of AARP members and staff who are on the weight-loss plan, shared with the audience what has worked for them and what has been a challenge. Panelists and audience members had an opportunity to ask Whyte questions and receive exclusive new recipes from him.
