Life@50+ Las Vegas Community Day of Service
The following are the projects that AARP volunteers supported during the Community Day of Service at the 2013 Life@50+ National Event & Expo in Las Vegas. Select any project name from the list below to learn more about it.
Adult Day Care Center of Las Vegas
The Adult Day Care Center of Las Vegas responds to the important mission of supporting senior citizens in their effort to remain independent with dignity in the community, maintaining quality of life and avoiding institutionalization. The Adult Day Care Center of Las Vegas helps many families avoid or postpone nursing home admission, bridging the gap between home and nursing home care with compassionate, professional care. The Adult Day Care Center of Las Vegas has two locations in southern Nevada: Las Vegas and Henderson.
Morning Session – Indoor Activity: Senior Center
AARP volunteers participated along with the senior citizens in the daily activities of exercise, art and game programs. The key to the sessions was to provide social interaction for the participants. The Las Vegas location in southern Nevada accommodated a limited number of volunteers.
Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy
The Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy (AACPA) is a model charter school whose goal is to offer academic programs designed to enhance a child's character, respect, motivation and self-discipline. Located in the heart of Las Vegas' most at-risk neighborhood, AACPA was created specifically to improve skill levels and combat lowered academic expectations while creating a climate of hope among this community's most-challenged children. Advanced technology, smaller class sizes and extended school hours are just some of the practices the AACPA utilizes to achieve a higher standard of education.
AACPA creates an environment that rewards students for positive behavior and disciplines unacceptable conduct. Teachers, parents and students each follow a Commitment to Excellence and a Code of Respect. Community leaders, educators and parents work together to establish high expectations for all students.
Morning Session – Indoor Activity: Schools/Youth Center
AARP volunteers were involved with a storybook session. This was limited to a small group of volunteers who were divided into stations based on children’s interest. Each station was designed to have activities that reinforced the current focus of the student lessons.
Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada
Catholic Charities is one of the largest nonprofit social service providers in the state, offering the most comprehensive range of human services since 1941. Catholic Charities includes 24 diverse programs designed to help people, from infants to seniors, regardless of race, religion or creed.
Morning Session – Light Indoor Activity: Schools/Senior/ Community Service
AARP volunteers had the opportunity to exercise their creative skills at the convention center as they created greetings cards for the many members of the community who are without family or are far away from their loved ones.
Clean the World
Clean the World Foundation Inc. was founded in February 2009 and has a two-part mission:
- Collect and recycle soap and shampoo products discarded by the hospitality industry every day
- Distribute these and other donated hygiene products to impoverished people, preventing some of the millions of deaths caused by hygiene-related illnesses
Clean the World works with our hospitality partners to train their staff on the soap and shampoo recycling process. Bins are provided for housekeeping staff to deposit collected soap and shampoo bottles. Bins are picked up weekly by Clean the World staff. Online training videos and housekeeping instruction posters are also provided.
Since its inception, Clean the World has been steadily increasing its services and operations to accommodate rapidly expanding community needs, awareness and donations, and has accepted in-kind donations of more than $1,000,000. In the process, Clean the World has distributed over 12 million soap bars in 65 countries and 200,000 pounds of shampoo and conditioners back into human use, simultaneously eliminating over 750 tons of waste.
Clean the World’s ONE PROJECT unites the fortunate with the less fortunate in one project. One team supports one belief that one kit for one individual can change one life.
Morning Session – Light to Moderate Indoor Activity: Packing Supplies/Green Project
AARP volunteers offered additional support at the Clean the World warehouse to help assemble hygiene kits that will be donated to local and regional charities, schools and senior centers in the Las Vegas community.
Good360 and Back 2 Basic Global Outreach
Those attending AARP Life@50+ Las Vegas Community Day of Service will have an opportunity to see first hand how our national charity works to ensure that donated corporate product resources go back into local communities and communities all across the country. Good360 will team up with Back 2 Basic Global Outreach, a local charity that takes an innovative approach to meeting the needs of the community by supplying nonperishable items to nonprofits, nongovernmental organizations and faith-based organizations throughout the Las Vegas Valley.
Morning Session – Light Indoor Activity: Packaging Supplies/ Green Project
AARP volunteers traveled to the Back 2 Basic distribution center. With the assistance of Good360 and Back2 Basic staff, they sorted donated products such as personal care, paper products, housewares, etc., eliminated bar codes from items and prepared donated items for final distribution.
Life@50+ Meal Packing Activity
All-Day Activity – Light Indoor Activity: Packaging Supplies/ Hunger Programs
The meal packing activity was held on-site at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Saturday, June 1, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. AARP volunteers helped pack bakery, produce and non-perishable ready-to-eat meals to be collected and later served to members of the community seeking assistance in feeding their families. St. Jude's Ranch for Children
St. Jude’s Ranch for Children has a 40-year history of healing and caring for abused, abandoned and neglected children. Founded in 1967 by Father Jack Adam, St. Jude’s Ranch for Children opened its doors to a single child in need of love and care. Since that first child, St. Jude’s Ranch for Children has provided healing and nurturing for more than 1,000 children. St. Jude’s Ranch has rescued abused, abandoned and neglected children of all races and faiths from the vicious cycle of child abuse and has provided healing and nurturing in a safe homelike environment where children can learn life skills to start new lives with new chances, new choices and new hope.
Morning Session – Light to Moderate Indoor/Outdoor Activity: Construction Site Preparation/Green Project
AARP volunteers were divided into teams as they worked together to help give 10 St. Jude homes a “facelift.” Each team was asked to paint the home interior, build drawers, piece together desks, install curtains and do some general cleaning at each home, “Making a St. Jude house a home.”
Morning Session – Light Indoor Activity: Packaging Supplies/ Schools/Hospital
AARP volunteers worked at the convention center to create “welcome bins” for children that have been discharged from local hospitals.
Three Square is southern Nevada’s only food bank providing food assistance to the residents of Lincoln, Nye, Esmeralda and Clark counties. The food bank serves as a central collection and distribution center for donated, rescued and solicited food and grocery products. We provide bakery, produce, dairy, nonperishable products and ready-to-eat meals to nonprofit and faith-based organizations who serve those in need in our community. We also facilitate childhood and senior nutrition programs as well as supplemental nutrition assistance outreach and advocacy efforts. We are a place for members of the community to meet, serve and collaborate as part of the food solution.
Three Square provides more than 24 million pounds of food and grocery products — the equivalent of nearly 18 million meals — per year to more than 650 program partners including nonprofit and faith-based organizations, schools and feeding sites throughout southern Nevada. Three Square is a member of the Feeding America network of food banks.
Morning Session – Light Indoor Activity: Packaging Supplies/Hunger Programs
