Leah Chase has cooked authentic Creole food in New Orleans for more than 50 years as executive chef at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant. Born in New Orleans, she grew up in a small country town across Lake Pontchartrain and later waited tables in the French Quarter. Soon after marrying Dooky Chase, Jr., in 1946, she helped transform his parents’ corner sandwich shop into a community landmark.
Chase has authored two cookbooks and is the subject of a biography titled Leah Chase: Listen, I Say Like This. She has been honored for her culinary skills and community work through a lifetime achievement award from the Southern Foodways Alliance, inclusion in the James Beard Foundation’s “Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in America” and received the Loving Cup from the New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper.
