Thank You for Supporting Californians

AARP Foundation donors made it possible to distribute $1.2 million in emergency grants. including $500,000 matching gifts from AARP and AARP Foundation to wildire recovery efforts.

The 2018 wildfire season in California was the deadliest and most destructive in the state’s history — with over 1 million acres destroyed. Entire neighborhoods were consumed by the flames, leaving people without employment, and families without homes.

The need in California was urgent — and donors helped seniors who lost so much. Here's an update on how donors made a difference in the aftermath of the wildfires.

Thanks to our compassionate and generous donors, the following nine organizations received $1.2 million in emergency grants, including $500,000 in matched funds from AARP and AARP Foundation:

  • North Valley Community Foundation
  • Legal Services of Northern California
  • United Way of Northern California
  • Community Action Agency of Butte County
  • California Vocations, Inc.
  • Chico Veterans Resource
  • Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles
  • Ventura County Community Foundation
  • California Community Foundation

Through the work of these organizations, donors have helped victims of these disasters repair their homes, get free legal advocacy services, and obtain financial support.

The rebuilding and recovery process for seniors affected by these disasters is a long one, but emergency gifts have already set that process in motion.
