Key Findings from Research on Strategies in Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Representation

Examining challenges to AANHPI survey participation and strategies for overcoming these barriers

In 2022, AARP Research and NORC published an academic journal article in Survey Practice that examined challenges to Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) survey participation and strategies for overcoming these barriers.

Through conducting a review of the literature and interviews with 15 experts, findings from the project show that barriers and challenges to survey participation for the AANHPI community include:

  • Lack of familiarity with surveys and their importance.
  • Lack of trust.
  • Issues of language and translation.

In addition, the findings show that strategies to increase AANHPI survey participation include:

  • Intentional outreach and inclusive recruitment methods.
  • Working together with leaders, experts, and organizations at the local community or national level, depending on the study focus.
  • Tailoring messaging about a study.
  • Providing more culturally responsive translations.
