Questions about this population's long-term care needs and issues were included in the 2002 AARP Colorado Member Opinion Survey from which this report is excerpted.

- 23 percent needed long-term care in the last five years. Of these, about a quarter had trouble finding such care when and where it was needed, and a third had trouble paying for it.
- 34 percent say they or a family member will need long-term care in the next five years.
- 88 percent say it is very or somewhat important to them to be able to stay at home if they were to become ill or disabled.
- 49 percent prefer to receive long-term care at home from a nurse or from family and friends.
