Seminar Introduction
An assisted living facility can be a good option for older people who can no longer live independently, but who do not have such serious health problems that they require nursing home care. Assisted living facilities, however, vary widely in the services they offer, the settings they provide and the costs involved. Finding the right one can be a difficult task.
This AARP seminar is designed to help older people and their families find the best facility for them. It explains the types of facilities and the services they may offer and provides a step-by-step guide to checking out a facility.
Learning Objectives
- List three services provided by assisted living facilities.
- Understand what kinds of medical needs are beyond the scope of most assisted living facilities.
- Research a prospective facility by checking out information provided by the facility and state regulators.
- Prepare for a visit to a facility to determine whether it will meet the needs of the prospective resident.
- Understand an assisted living facility contract and know four things to look for in order to protect the prospective resident ' s rights.
