Mr. Holmes is a new twist on the world's most famous detective. In 1947, an aging Sherlock Holmes (Ian McKellen) returns from a journey to Japan, where, in search of a rare plant with powerful restorative qualities, he has witnessed the devastation of nuclear warfare. Now, in his remote seaside farmhouse, Holmes faces the end of his days tending to his bees, with only the company of his housekeeper (Laura Linney) and her young son, Roger (Milo Parker). Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits the circumstances of the unsolved case that forced him into retirement and searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love — before it's too late.

Love & Mercy presents an unconventional portrait of Brian Wilson (Paul Dano and John Cusack, as older Wilson), the mercurial singer, songwriter and leader of the Beach Boys. Set against the era-defining catalog of Wilson’s music, the film intimately examines the personal voyage and ultimate salvation of the icon whose success came at extraordinary personal cost. Paul Giamatti plays Eugene Landy, Wilson’s therapist.

Forty years ago, young artist Alex Carver (Korey Jackson) bought a run-down, two-bedroom apartment in a sketchy part of Brooklyn for him and his wife, schoolteacher Ruth (Claire van der Boom). Today, their neighborhood is very hip and their apartment worth a small fortune. For their part, the now-retired Ruth (Diane Keaton) and still-painting Alex (Morgan Freeman) haven’t changed — they are as much in love as ever. But they have let Ruth’s niece Lily (Cynthia Nixon), a real estate agent, list their property to see what the market might bear. Whether they change their lives drastically or simply decide to remain content with what they have, Ruth and Alex realize the same bond of love that has kept them together all these years will surely allow them to see their way through this crazy weekend as well.

Join writer Jill Ciment for a postscreening Q&A.
