In 2013, AARP swarmed into two major cities to host the Life@50+ National Event & Expo and invited attendees to help lend a hand in both deserving cities. Las Vegas and Atlanta welcomed AARP and its attendees as they embarked on their volunteer mission across neighborhoods throughout both cities, engaging residents in areas that impact their daily lives. AARP will once again host a large-scale voluntourism project as a kickoff to the Life@50+ event in Boston. Come enjoy a day of service as we spread out across the Greater Boston area to leave a lasting legacy in this historic city.
On Thursday, May 8, 2014, hundreds of AARP volunteers will be assembled in groups and transported into neighborhoods of need in Boston, as well as various projects inside the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. Each neighborhood will feature a variety of work opportunities — activities that will support the cultivation of the community: home and school refurbishing, landscaping, mentoring, green projects, construction of community gardens and senior community center revitalization. There will be something for people of every ability — low-impact to high-impact activities — and at the end of our day, you will leave behind a positive and historic mark on the city of Boston and its residents. We will offer half-day opportunities, and all supplies, transportation and project leadership will be provided.
In addition to the Community Day of Service on Thursday, AARP Foundation will host a three-day meal-packing activity, Thursday through Saturday, on the exhibit floor of the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. If you're not able to join us for one of the indoor or outdoor volunteer activities on our Community Day of Service, consider signing up for one or all three of the meal-packing days, May 8-10, and help impact hunger needs in the community. All meals packed will be donated to the Greater Boston Food Bank for distribution to organizations across the Greater Boston area.
So please join us and our community partner, Boston Cares, and be part of the Life@50+ Boston Community Day of Service.
