Activating an Alleyway

LOCATION: Camden, South Carolina
GRANTEE: City of Camden
Bereft of any welcoming amenities, a 120-foot-long alleyway in downtown Camden received a major face-lift. Passersby were encouraged to pop in during the “alley activation project” and make a stained-glass globe that would hang alongside new shade canopies and LED string lights. “It’s wonderful to see the residents who created pieces strolling through the alley and pointing out to friends and family where their piece is located,” said Katharine Spadacenta, the city’s Main Street program manager.
The AARP Community Challenge funds “quick-action” projects that build momentum for local change to improve livability for people of all ages.
