Highlights of 2013 Winning Strategies

One program of particular interest to mature employees at Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) is the School at Work Program. This seven-month refresher educational program is for individuals who have been out of a traditional learning setting for a significant time period and prepares the employee for additional formal education or a career change. Retiree Medical Accounts are offered for employees retiring at age 55-plus with at least 10 years of service. The medical account is funded annually, starting at age 40, and the retiree can use the funds after retirement for medical expenses and insurance premiums.

Additional Policies and Practices

  • Workplace Culture/Continued Opportunities: YNHH employees working 24-plus hours per week are eligible for tuition reimbursement while all employees receive certification classes; in-house classroom training; reimbursement of registration costs for review courses; financial support for nurses to attend local, regional and national Health Care conferences; and online training. In a recent 12-month period, 100 percent of employees participated in at least one of the training opportunities with an average of 40 hours spent in training. Long-service anniversaries are celebrated with announcements, parties, gifts and awards. Employees with 25 years of service become members of the Yale-New Haven Quarter Century Club. Based on information gathered from its employee opinion surveys, YNHH has increased the number of financial programs and services offered; opened the YNHH Livingwell Fitness Center; instituted the Employee Hardship Program, which provides temporary financial support for employees in a financial crisis; and offers the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, which provides free income tax preparation services to employees in lower income brackets. Employees can work in temporary work assignments, on team projects and in formal mentoring programs.
  • Benefits/Health: Employees working 24-plus hours per week receive individual and family medical coverage, individual and family prescription drug coverage, individual and family vision and dental insurance, and short-term disability. Employees working 40 hours per week receive long-term disability. Health benefits for retirees age 65-plus include individual and spouse medical and prescription drug coverage, as well as individual life insurance or other death benefit coverage. New hires are eligible for all of the above benefits upon retirement. Flexible spending accounts (FSAs) are available to assist in covering out-of-pocket health care costs. Additional health care savings are offered with discounts on certain medications purchased at affiliated pharmacies, and generic medications no longer have a minimum copay. Full- and part-time employees receive the following wellness benefits: flu shots, health screenings, health risk appraisals, smoking cessation programs, health club discounts, physical activity and weight loss programs, nutrition counseling, an on-site fitness center, confidential coaching programs, and stress management training. EAP services are available to full- and part-time employees as well as their family members.
  • Benefits/Financial: All employees are offered a 403(b) plan with employer match, and those working 19-plus hours per week are offered a cash-balance or other hybrid plan. Employees are automatically enrolled in the 403(b) plan, and plan participants may choose to invest in lifecycle funds that automatically reallocate assets based on age or proximity to retirement. Staff members, staff from the financial services firm that administers the 403(b) plan, and external financial planning experts provide financial planning information and training to employees. YNHH Benefits Department offers in-house retirement seminars, annual financial fairs, and financial wellness workshops, which focus on budgeting, credit reporting, financial planning and Social Security. Employees are offered short- and long-term leaves of absence without pay for caregiving needs. Full- and part-time employees are offered dependent care benefits including on-site child care and grandchild care, referral services to assist with child care, grandchild care and eldercare, as well as backup care for child care and eldercare.

  • Benefits/Alternative Work Arrangements: All employees can participate in alternative work arrangements such as flextime and telecommuting. Employees working 24-plus hours per week can work compressed work schedules and job sharing is offered to full-time employees working 40 hours per week. Full-time employees are eligible to move to part-time work on a permanent or temporary basis.

  •  Opportunities for Retirees: YNHH has 1,012 retirees and an individual directly responsible for retiree relations. The hospital stays connected with its retirees by communicating regularly, inviting retirees to organization events, providing retirees with ongoing access to retirement planning workshops and information, and by formally acknowledging employees upon their retirement. The following work arrangements are offered to retirees: temporary work assignments, consulting/contract work, telecommuting, per-diem positions, and full- and part-time work.

  •  Age of Workforce: Thirty percent of YNHH employees are age 50-plus. The average tenure of employees age 50-plus is 18 years.
