How Can I Make a Difference?
AARP members are our greatest resource to help achieve goals that Ohio members care about—access to long-term health care, health care reform, financial security, independent living, consumer protections and more. Choice and flexibility are the main benefits to volunteering with AARP. You decide where you want to put your energy and how much time you can commit. Together, we’ll assess your interests and identify the talents you want to use so we can find the perfect spot for you.
What are the Benefits?
There are many benefits to being an AARP Ohio volunteer:
• Use your skills and gain new experience
• Keep things interesting with a variety of flexible volunteer opportunities
• Meet new people — other AARP members, volunteers and staff
• Be part of a dynamic volunteer team
• Fulfill your urge for lifelong learning
• Connect more deeply with AARP — a respected organization with 1.5 million members in Ohio and 36 million nationally
• Make a positive difference in the lives of others in your community
What If I'm Not Retired?
You don't have to be. You decide how many hours you can commit and the issues you want to be involved in.
What Are My Choices?
Advocacy
AARP is a strong advocate addressing the issues most important to the 50+ population. Whether it's improving the quality of long-term care services or protecting consumers' rights, AARP volunteers serve as a powerful voice. Add your voice to advocate for state and federal issues on behalf of older adults and their families.
Health Care Reform
Health Care Reform Issue Specialist volunteers will represent the Association in coalition meetings, public speaking engagements, and leadership of a small team of AARP health care reform activists in targeted areas of the state. Activists on teams will educate and inform voters on Ohio’s health care reform legislation.
Divided We Fail Community Pledge Collector
AARP has launched Divided We Fail to raise the voices of millions of Americans who believe that health care and life-time financial security are the most pressing domestic issues facing our nation. Learn the issues, add your voice and find out how you can get involved at www.dividedwefail.org. Reach out to your friends, neighbors and coworkers and ask them to sign a pledge card. We’ll send you a kit that includes brochures, DWF pledge cards, and a postage-paid return envelope for signed pledges. We’ll throw in a Divided We Fail t-shirt too. You decide how much time you want to spend. We’ll keep you as busy as you want!
Community Service
AARP has a long-standing tradition of community involvement, and AARP Ohio offers a range of opportunities for members who want to provide one-to-one service to individuals. You can:
• Become an AARP Driver Safety instructor and teach older drivers how to improve their skills.
• Manage the AARP Driver Safety Program as a state coordinator and ensure that Ohio drivers continue to have the opportunity to remain safe on the roads.
• Prepare basic tax returns for people of all ages with low and moderate incomes in your community with AARP Tax-Aide and save them money on costly preparation services.
