AARP Michigan held its second AARP College June 3 and 4 at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, and volunteers, staff and guests came together to "Ignite the Power" of our volunteers.
Approximately 150 people attended a variety of classes on AARP issues and resources designed to empower volunteers by giving them the information and tools they need to be most effective.
State President Eric Schneidewind and all the members of AARP Michigan's Executive Council were present and participated in the College.
The 16 classes (most of which were repeated at least once) included issue seminars, leadership seminars, and skill- building sessions. In addition, various plenary sessions focused on topics including election year issue analysis, politics and priorities.
Ed Sarpolus, Vice President of EPIC/MRA, a much quoted survey research and political analysis firm, spoke at that plenary session, along with Ed Burtenshaw, AARP's National Coordinator, Congressional Relations and Grassroots Operations.
Other guest instructors from AARP's National Office in Washington, DC included:
Director of Congressional Relations and Political Affairs Ridge Multop
Director of Advisory and Liaison Services Noella Ronald
History Consultant Lily Liu
Administration and Management Operations Project Coordinator Cynthia Jefferson
Regional Liaison John Reinhart
Volunteer Training and Development Manager Terry Edwards
State Affairs Senior Legislative Representative Clare Hushbeck
Midwest Volunteer Coordinator Dave Mills was among the many volunteers participating and teaching classes.
