AARP Driver Safety Program Recognizes Volunteer

The AARP Driver Safety Program (DSP) recently recognized Tom Burch of Apache Junction for his volunteer service with the program. Burch was honored for having instructed 263 Driver Safety Course classes in the East Valley in which over 5100 attendees participated.

Burch has been a volunteer with DSP for eleven years and is also a former State Coordinator for the AARP program.

“I’m honored to be recognized by the AARP Driver Safety Program,” said Burch. “I enjoy teaching the course and find my volunteer work with the program very meaningful as it helps people become more aware and helps them develop safe driving skills.”

The AARP Driver Safety Program (DSP) is the nation's first and largest classroom driver refresher course specially designed for drivers age 50 and older. Since 1979, over 9 million people have completed the course.

The program is designed to teach participants how to reduce traffic violations, avoid crashes and other opportunities for injuries, keep up-to-date on relevant traffic laws and provide strategies to compensate for age-related changes that affect driving ability.

“The AARP Driver Safety Program is a great community service program,” said Jerry Hartley, Arizona DSP State Coordinator. “The course provides important information about safe strategies for managing today's increasingly challenging driving environment and helps people develop safe driving skills.”

Upon completion of the course, a graduate may be able to receive a reduction on their vehicle insurance premium. Class attendance must be renewed every three years to maintain the insurance discount. AARP members and non-members alike may take the course. The four-hour classroom course costs $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-AARP members. There are no tests.
