the
Background

Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs give their time and talents to make the world a better place. And while changing the lives of others, they are changing their own lives.

Many of these volunteers have powerful stories to tell — stories of courage, humor, trials, triumphs and, above all, inspiration.

AARP's Create the Good arranged the recording sessions. Each of 20 volunteers was interviewed by a person important to the storyteller or by a volunteer interviewer.

The conversations were recorded by StoryCorps, which has collected more than 30,000 interviews and preserved them at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.
